Houston & Delancey (MMM show poem 2/16/12 @ Sidewalk Cafe, NYC)
I was walking home last night and a delivery guy stopped me and asked if I knew were Houston and Delancey was. I looked at him kind of weird. I’m sorry my friend but that’s impossible, I said. Anyone who has lived in the city long enough knows that these 2 streets run parallel to each other. He showed me a receipt and it was printed right there: Houston and Delancey. What a mean trick someone must have played on this guy. It seemed like he couldn't speak much English. I had to just walk away saying, "Sorry, I can't help you." I thought a little bit more about it. I flashed my high school geometry class lesson about 2 parallel lines that never intersect. I imagined this poor guy riding his bike down a Houstan street that stretched around the globe, for the rest of his life, forever searching for it’s never intersecting Delancey street. I started to think of how different the things used to be on either sides of these two streets throughout history, separated by a mere 3 blocks. And how each coming year the lines that they used to represent, like many neighborhoods around the world, are being blurred and redrawn. Read more »

Daydream Ration is the third song to be released from Schwervon!’s Memphis sessions with Doug Easley (Pavement, Sonic Youth, Cat Power). Matt says his original inspiration for the duo taking the trip down south was listening to old Grifters albums, and specifically reading a very conspicuous advertisement for Easley-McCain Studios on the inside fold of the Grifters’ first Sub Pop Release “Ain’t My Lookout”. Everything came full circle when Dave Shouse (Grifters, Those Bastard Souls, The New Mary Jane) agreed to appear as a guest vocalist for this track. Read more »

American Idle is the second song to be released from Schwervon!'s Memphis sessions with Doug Easley (Pavement, Sonic Youth, Cat Power). The song was originally called American Idol. While in the studio, Easley half-jokingly suggested changing the spelling from "Idol" to "Idle" to avoid any future copyright infringements from the popular TV Show. Legal issues aside, Nan and Matt liked the alternate spelling better anyway.

Spreading the good news all across the land
Nan kind of put it pretty well on her blog already. But I figured I'd spread the word that we will be moving to Shawnee, Kansas on April 2nd. As of that date, this will be our new home base and the home of Olive Juice Music. It's going to be quite a change and I'll try as hard as I can to keep people updated about our progress. One of the main reasons for this move is to enable our band (Schwervon!) better access to touring other parts of the US. Of course we will miss all of our good friends in New York but we are also a bit excited about discovering new parts of the country and seeing a few more stars. Needless to say it would be very difficult for me to maintain the "Distro" part of Olive Juice Music. As you may or may not know, aside from some summer intern help from my friend Soléna 2 years ago, the distro part of OJ has been pretty much a one person operation. I've contacted Dibs, our unofficial OJ site manager, and asked him if there is a way to only shut down the store section. He's on the case. I'm sure I'll talk more about this in future blogs but the idea is to keep the store open until March 1st. This should allow time to sort out the warehouse before we hit the road in April. Of course I'd love to be able to bring the store back some day, maybe even with more cool bands that we meet from other parts of the country. But for now this is how things will be. The OJ Open Blog, Calendar, and Forum will stay and hopefully continue to keep us connected to all our friends around the globe. I've started a thread on the forum about this and I invite people to comment and share any thoughts and/or ideas in reference to the news. Read more »

Comedy, New Schwervon! Stats., WTF
My friend Soce asked me to perform for a "First Timers" comedy hour this Monday night. I will be performing 5 minutes of original comedy material. It should be interesting. I've always been fascinated with Comedians. I have a lot of respect for them. I've been doing these "day of" poems at my Major Matt shows so in a way I feel like I've been feeling myself moving in that direction. I'm not saying that I'm going to be making any career changes anytime soon but I feel like preparing to entertain a room full of people for 5 minutes with nothing but your brain has been kind of therapeutic (and kind of terrifying). Last summer, Schwervon! took a break from the hustle and bustle of their home headquarters in New York City and headed south to the land of Elvis and Stax Records (Memphis, TN). Their mission was to record with legendary indie rock engineer Doug Easley (Pavement, Sonic Youth, Cat Power). Truth Teller is an early taste of Schwervon!’s summer session with Easley.

2012 Love and Friends
Welcome to the new year! For the past few years I've been consulting my internal crystal ball to come up with a theme for the year. I can't explain the process. It's usually something like the first thing that pops into my head. 2010 was: The Year of Enchantment and 2011 was: Something is going to happen. 2012 is: The Year of Love and Friends.

There is something about adversity that inspires us to discover love in all sorts of new places. Nan and I are fully into the guilty pleasure that is "Friday Night Lights" right now (a TV series that centers around High School football in a small town in southern Texas). Read more »

Schwervon! had an upstate gig last night in Cold Spring, NY. Cold Spring is a beautiful little NYC town about an hour outside of the city. The main street kind of felt like a movie set.

On the way there we ran into an R-1 train at the 2nd Ave. F stop. You can learn about it from the link but basically it's the first car ever built for the NYC Independent subway system. They're these really fun refurbished cars from the 1930's. I was kind of amazed at how similar they are to the ones we have today. The most distinctive difference, outside of the ads, were these huge (head chopping) ceiling fans throughout the cars. No AC back then. Summer must have been rough. The dark bolted metal exterior kind of reminded me of old WW2 ships or tanks. I managed to snap a couple of pics before we had to grab our much less charming uptown F train across the platform. The pic to the left a touristy shot I got of the Crysler building while walking over to catch Metro North at Grand Central. Read more »

It was a chilly night. I was pretty tired due to the fact that I had worked the night before until 4am for a Goth Dance Party at Bowery Poetry club. Nan and I headed over to Chelsea at around noon for to server as extras for a Debutante Hour photo shoot. The theme of the shoot was awkward prom.

Luckily, Goodbye Blue Monday serves my favorite energy drink: Manhattan Special on ice mixed with half and half. I slammed 2 of them and then I was good to go. Read more »

A Poetic Week
I had 2 late nights working at Bowery Poetry Club this weekend. I saw a lot of nice poetry and was lucky enough to witness the debut of Faceboyz Folliez a new variety type show featuring some of my favorite local Art Stars. This is a great chance to check out classic Lower East Side trash comedy and burlesque performance art before the whole neighborhood turns into a Whole Foods.

The MMM solo show at Sidewalk with, Jesse Lee, Barry Bliss, Toby Goodshank (and band) and Brain and The Aardvarks was sort of a reunion show for Barry, Toby, Brian and I. It was about 2 years ago that we did a mini East Coast tour together entitled "The 3 Headed Beast." The lovely and talented Fran Agnone (Ladies of Old Hat) backed me up on percussion. I'm finding her influence on my solo works a real breath of fresh air. Hopefully, we will continue to work together. Here is the original poem from last night's show. NY you're keeping me busy. Less time on the Facebook and more face-time with new faces. It's shaping up to be a very interesting holiday season. I started a new live sound gig at Bowery Poetry club. Some good stuff happening there. Poetry slams, college band showcases, and all night Goth parties...reconnecting with my youthful passions while getting paid for it. I've had worse gigs. I just sent some questions to the Occupy Musicians website for a RRDB Blog feature. So, stay tuned for that.

It was a long day that started around 6 am for me. I headed up to Liberty Park for an early morning protest/celebration honoring the 2 month anniversary of the OCW movement. There was a full day of non violent action planned. The morning event was a march in front of the Wall Street Stock Exchange to symbolically call for a shut down of the corrupt and unregulated financial practices that take place there. A press release about the protest said they wanted to make it an especially musical one and that you should write your story, in the form of a slogan, on a sign and display it at the protest. I decided to bring a long a mini djembe that my sister gave me.

After a long work day I headed down to the OWS General Assembly yesterday around 7pm at Liberty Park. I'd been following the displacement of the occupiers earlier that morning. I managed to catch the last half of the GA. The big message was the day of protest on the 17th. Initially there were roughly 1000 people but the crowd thinned out as the night went on. There appeared to be a fresh wave of energy throughout the park. The footlights that covered the parks floor had been turned back on. I hadn't noticed them on my previous visits. They gave the entire space a kind invigorating glow. The entire perimeter of the grounds is now surrounded by heavy metal guard rails and there is a strong presence of private security guards in yellow reflective vests. The new strictly enforced law is no sleeping bags, tents or sleeping in the park. After the GA, a smaller group of people went to march on the city courthouse to protest the polices treatment of some of the female occupiers that were recently arrested. At various points throughout the evening people brought plates of food, pizza and even cookies and sweets. Read more »

There, before the Stock Exchange, we will exchange stories rather than stocks.

Nan being away has given me a lot of time to fill in my day. Aside from a new part time live sound gig and some recent studio work with the bands Elastic No No Band and Red Gretchen some of my closer friends may have noticed that after owning a Macbook for about 5 years I finally got around to using the iMovie program. It turns out it's a pretty darn easy program to use. I've decided to start combining my recent interest in photography with my not so recent interest in music. Here's what's coming out. After a morning jog and a little work on my latest video I decided to go down to Liberty park and check up on the Occupy Wall Street scene. It had been a while since I'd been down there. About a block away from the park I was swept up by an Occupy Oakland Anti- Police Brutality solidarity march. The march went past City Hall and down in front of the police station and then back to Liberty Park. It was a little scary because they had barricades in front of the station that they could have easily pinned us into similar to the mass arrest round up that took place on the Brooklyn Bridge march. Luckily everything went pretty smoothly. Aside from the massive amounts of them, the cops seemed pretty chill. I even had one officer politely request to pass in front of me as he went to cross the street and then thanked me after. I'm sad to say there were a handful of nuts, marching with the crowd, that were shouting obscenities at the cops and taunting them by waving flags and banners at them. Luckily, nothing got out of hand. But like I said, the police presence was really massive and just the site of this many cops and cop cars and scooters seemed to heighten the tension a bit.
