Goodshank - Untitled (2009) "My first encounter with the man called Toby Goodshank came when I was 14, I had been wandering in the Gobi desert for several years. I had no real memory of my life prior to that point. On this particular day I stood, contemplating my course, nothing but featureless expanses of white as far as the eye could see in all directions. A man appeared beside me. Despite the fact that the sun stood at high noon and the terrain provided absolutely no possibility for concealment, he had managed to sneak up behind me. Startled, I fell backwards. He stood about 8 feet tall and wore the raiment of a wizard. A labyrinth of mystical signifiers upon his heavy blue cape shone green and gold, sending me deep into a trance. I sat, and after a time he he reached inside his cape and slowly he withdrew an electric guitar. The guitar, like the patterns of the cloak, radiated spectral energy. He held it aloft and I gazed upon it, falling deeper and deeper into the trance. Again he reached into his cape, this time producing an amplifier and speaker cabinet, which he held in the palm of one hand. The amplifier had no discernible controls or power source. Nonetheless he plugged in the guitar and it began to emit an electric hum. He stood, motionless, meditating for several days and then, on the eve of the third day, he began to play. His hand glided slowly but deftly over the fretboard without touching it. He performed what i believe was the most virtuosic guitar solo that has ever been performed. He coaxed tones from the instrument that far exceeded the range of human hearing, but which were made audible to me. Through those tones he imparted forbidden knowledge to me..."Baked Naturals"..."Johnny's War"...These evocations of deep psychosexual torment, were they titles of albums in which this Faustian knowledge was encoded or were they passwords which awaken the sleeper, initiating the final act of self-assassination with a stream of urethral micro-darts, unfolding with the inertia of tragedy and obliterating the adrenal cortex? |
